Format PDF/A

Modified on Wed, 12 Jun at 3:53 PM

Why do we need PDF/A?

The large amount of content that can be embedded in PDFs can cause problems for long-term archiving, as it may conflict with long-term preservation requirements (e.g. because PDFs are not self-contained - they may use system fonts and other external content). PDF/A is designed to ensure that documents remain readable, accessible and able to provide their content in the long term.

What are the disadvantages of PDF/A?

Graphical elements may be lost when converting to this format.

So when to convert?

When you need to archive a document for a long period of time (e.g. in a trusted electronic archive)
