For each person in the document, you specify with the contract_role field what they will do with the document — whether they sign it, approve it, or just receive it for their information.
Overview of roles
| Role | What it means |
|---|---|
sign |
Signs — a handwritten signature in the app (drawn or uploaded). The most common choice. |
approve |
Approves — the user agrees to the document but does not place a signature in it. |
stamp |
The user only verifies via SMS PIN; the document will then show, in place of the signature, text along the lines of “Signed by Jan Novák on 23 Jan 2026”. |
sign_certificate |
Signs with a certificate — an electronic signature based on a certificate. Depending on the workspace settings, a qualified certificate may be required, or Signi may allow signing with any certificate (for example a recognized one). |
sign_bank_id_sign |
Signs via Bank iD. |
sign_remote_sign |
Remote qualified signature — a certificate stored with a signature service provider, see Signing via I.CA RemoteSign. |
handy_signatur_sign |
Signing with the Austrian Handy-Signatur (mobile signature for Austria). |
notice |
For information — the user receives the signed document by e-mail, or it appears in their workspace if they are registered. They neither sign nor approve. |
What to watch out for
- Some roles must be enabled in the workspace — this concerns signatures via third parties: certificate, Bank iD, remote signature, and Handy-Signatur. A disabled role returns the error “Contract role [role] is not enabled for this workspace” — see Errors and their solutions.
- The
sign, stamp, and certificate signature roles require a signature placement in the document;approveandnoticehave no placement. - Roles can be combined — e.g. the proposer
approve, the counterpartysign_certificate. A nonsensical combination returns the error “Function … cannot be used for contract role …”.
